In 1762, Sir John Hussey Delaval covered every inch of the Holly Room – even the back of the doors – with tapestries showing country scenes. They helped to keep the room warm as well as decorating it, but they were over a hundred years old when Sir John put them up. At the time, wallpaper was already much more popular than tapestry so perhaps Sir John being deliberately old-fashioned! The tapestries were made in Flanders, now part of Belgium, in the early 17th Century. The Doddington tapestries are now considered rare.
