SQUEEZE IN COURGETTE & SQUASH SAT 26, FREE

Delicious and versatile courgette and summer squash, a delight to grow and cook with, will be the focus of our free event VegWatchers in our Farm Shop & Cafe this Saturday 26 July from 11am to 2pm.

Pop along to see the inspirational dishes that have been made, sample a few and take home lots of recipes. Great for the cook and gardener alike, as well as a brilliant educational fun for children. In fact these plentiful veg are such a gift to the home cook and chef that Claire Birch is urging people to come along and swap recipes with her as she is sure there are many ideas out there she is yet to discover!

Among the dishes and recipes will be chocolate courgette cake, lemon butter courgettes & summer squash, courgette boats, pickled zucchini, zucchini bread, summer squash fresh herb fritters, calabacitas (a Spanish dish) and tempura courgette. Also included will be courgette and ricotta pancakes and courgette and green tomato chutney.

Claire, who owns and runs the Hall, is a passionate lover and grower of veg! She will be sharing her favourite courgette recipes including courgette & saffron pasta and courgette char-grilled with herbs and is looking forward to chatting with you.

There are many courgettes and summer squash growing at Doddington in the Kitchen Garden and on display in the shop. However, not everyone is sure what to do with them other than perhaps in a ratatouille so we have plenty of free ideas and recipes for you to take home!

Food enthusiast and farm shop favourite Jane Forster will be joining Claire to meet people wanting to know more about courgette and squash, and will be offering some delicious tastings.

The courgette (sometimes called a zucchini and also considered a ‘summer squash’) can vary in colour from an intensely deep green to a bright yellow, depending on the variety. They can vary from carrot-sized to near marrow-sized. They are a good source of potassium and vitamin A, as well as being low in calories. The courgettes need picking as soon as they're ripe, or they rot quickly on the plant. In Italy, they don't just eat the courgette, they also eat the flowers. These are delicious in salads or even in tempura-style batter and deep-fried.

If customers feel they want to make any of the recipes, there will be plenty of courgettes and summer squashes – fresh from the Kitchen Garden that morning - for sale in the Farm Shop as well as plenty of ingredients needed.

As courgette and summer squash are grown in Doddington Hall’s two-acre Kitchen Garden, during the day people are invited to walk round the growing veg, fruit and herbs and enjoy the sight of not only the courgette and squash but other seasonal veg such as new potatoes, lettuces, artichokes and raspberries.

For those wishing to relax and enjoy a courgette or squash dish, the Farm Shop Café menu will feature courgette and squash (booking advisable 01522 688 581) and the daily Courtyard BBQ will also be open offering refreshments plus rare breed BBQ treats (no need to book.)
