Enter our marmalade competition!
Calling all marmalade makers and home cooks: why not enter your delicious creations into our simple competition in the Farm Shop Cafe on Saturday 7 February? The prizes are very tasty, the rules are short and the atmosphere will be fun with BBC Radio Lincolnshire's Judy Theobald on the judging panel!
As a part of our Marmalade Fiesta and marmalade season, we're holding a competition to find the best home-made marmalade, and the best home-made dish - sweet or savoury - that has marmalade or Seville oranges as an ingredient.
Please drop your jar of marmalade or home-made dish into our Farm Shop asap. Jars can be dropped in anytime between now and 2pm on the day of judging (Saturday 7th February); home-cooking can be brought in right up until 2pm on the day of judging. (You can post jars if you wish but please wrap them well!) Judging takes place live at 3pm on Saturday 7th February - you can come and watch if you like whether you have entered a dish or not! The winners will each receive a delicious 'Fish Supper Friday for Two'.
The rules are simple: 1. If you are entering a jar of marmalade, you must have made the marmalade yourself. 2. If you are entering some home-baking or cooking, it must have made using marmalade or Seville oranges as an ingredient but this can include marmalade made by someone else, or shop bought (from our shop if you like, our jars are now on sale). The recipe need not be your own. 3. Please label your jar or box with just your name and a phone number, which we will cover up for judging. 4. The competition's just for fun and will be judged on a points basis; the person with the most points for marmalade and the person with the most points for the home-cooking will each win a prize of a Fish Supper Friday for Two, excluding drinks, available in the Farm Shop Cafe Friday evenings from Friday 6 March.
As the marmalade season is now in full swing here at Doddington, we're busy making our own marmalade and selling Seville oranges in the shop for the home-preserver. Our jars of marmalade will be on sale from Friday 6th February!
Everyone is invited to watch the judging and there is plenty else going on between 11am and 4pm: there will be tastings of delicious marmalades, recipes for you to take home and try, dishes cooked with marmalade and Seville oranges for you to taste and of course there will be heavenly orangey dishes on the Cafe lunch menu (reservations advisable, please call 01522 688 581).
If you'd like to make your own marmalade, try ours or of course use your own tried and tested method:
Ingredients
2lb Seville oranges
4lb sugar
2 pints water
2 lemons
Method
Wash the oranges thoroughly. Half, and squeeze the juice and collect the pips in a muslin bag and tie up tightly. Using the pressure cooker put the water and the oranges, orange juice and pips into the pan and pressure cook for 10 minutes at 10lb pressure.
Reduce pressure immediately. When cool enough to handle take the bag of pips out and squeeze to get the maximum pectin out. Then remove the softened oranges and cut them up as thinly as possible and put them back into the pan.
Now add the juice of the two lemons and the sugar and bring to a rolling boil and boil until set - usually between 15 and 20 minutes. Let stand for five minutes to prevent fruit floating then pour into warmed jars and seal.
Enjoy!
Any queries, please feel very welcome to give us a call on 01522 688 581.
