Chance to see the Winning Scarecrows at Doddington until 13 June

Our search for scarecrows made by local schoolchildren is now over, with a dozen displayed in the Kitchen Garden and the winner announced. The competition – part of a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund - was a way to get schoolchildren thinking about how crops are grown and how farmers worked in previous centuries.

Judging was very hard, with not only a lot of work evident but great ideas also. The scarecrows were judged on the criteria of creativity, materials, fit-for-purpose, strength of build quality, attractiveness in the Doddington setting and whether the scarecrow was the children’s own work.

The winning scarecrow was EcoCrow, made by pupils at Nettleham Infants School, which was felt to be very creative with a fantastic use of materials and definitely fit for purpose. Second place went to the Green Man scarecrow, made by North Clifton Primary School. Third was Lovell House; joint fourth was Minster School and Caistor Church of England & Methodist Primary School whilst joint fifth place went to Ranby House and Polyplatt Primary.

EcoCrow wins Nettleham Infants School a school visit to Doddington for 40 pupils.

The scarecrows will be displayed in the Kitchen Garden until Sunday 13 June, for the public to enjoy. Access to the Kitchen Garden is free except on days when all the Gardens are opened to the public. (Wednesdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays.)

We have thoroughly enjoyed holding our first scarecrow competition and seeing the children’s work make such a colourful display in the Kitchen Garden. We hope you enjoy seeing them as much as we are enjoying having them here!
