Doddington's Smallest Room
Doddington Hall has opened a new room on the ground floor of Doddington Hall – a downstairs loo with a difference!
This tiny loo, tucked away under the stairs, has been redecorated in great style by James Birch. It is a wonderful place to display the antiquarian collection of Edwin Jarvis, Claire Birch’s Great, Great, Grandfather, and James has added a few more collections made up of items from around Doddington. Edwin Jarvis’ collection of tiny items is arranged in a display cabinet: small fragments of Roman artefacts found around the Estate and Lincoln including coins, pottery and even a horse’s hoof. (Edwin Jarvis was a known ‘magpie’ and was responsible for the Tom Otter’s gibbet being kept at Doddington after it was finally blown down in the 1850s. He also kept meticulous diaries and hand-drawn catalogues of his finds.)
James has continued this Doddington tradition of collecting and has created a fascinating old style ‘Gents’ full of interesting and historic items. There’s a collection of vintage riding boots and horse-whips alongside light-catching decanters and military hats.
