'Save Doddington Hall!' programme Whether you are looking at life in Tudor or Victorian times or studying outdoor science Doddington provides a host of learning opportunities. Our experienced education team will tailor each workshop to the age and abilities of the children making it a busy, fulfilling day for children throughout their primary years. All parties are encouraged to take an interactive tour of the Hall led by a costumed guide who will explore the house in character. This programme has been helped by The Heritage Lottery Fund. The tour can provide emphasis on: Tudors KS2 / Victorians KS1/2 / Homes long ago KS1 / Time Travelling (KS1/2) / Go on a journey back in time with Sarah, a 'past inhabitant' of Doddington Hall who will tell you the many fascinating stories around the Hall and the people that lived there from Tudor times to modern day. A day at Doddington is always special and tailor made for your class. There are many more opportunities for cross-curricular learning such as story telling, creative writing, looking at portraits and drama. Please phone to discuss your requirements. We encourage all schools new to the programme to make a recce visit to Doddington to discuss their requirements, plan their visit and complete all H&S documentation. Please contact Catherine Lee our Education Officer to discuss this and reserve a date for your visit. Catherine can be contacted via 01777 228 508 or schools@doddingtonhall.com Cost £4.60 per child for a full day of up to 4 activities. For shorter visits, please enquire. "The children have voted this trip one of the best ever." "It demonstrated principles and knowledge already taught and provided lots of new learning and greater understanding." "They looked at portraits . . . probably for the first time properly!" "The trip allowed broad curriculum work that engaged the children right up to 1.30pm on the last day of term." Workshops offered are listed below. All workshops take between 50 minutes and an hour. The tour can provide emphasis on: Tudors KS2 Victorians KS1/2 Homes long ago KS1 Time Travelling (KS1/2) Go on a journey back in time with Sarah, a 'past inhabitant' of Doddington Hall who will tell you the many fascinating stories around the Hall and the people that lived there from Tudor times to modern day. Working in 'the big house' (KS1/2) Annie, a 'Victorian maid,' will tell you tales of working at the 'big house' and the many jobs she has to do including cleaning out the fireplaces and emptying chamber pots! Any Old Iron! (KS1/2) The beautiful Tent Room provides an opportunity to explore some of the Victorian artifacts that were used here at Doddington. A great fun, hands - on activity in a magical setting. Finish by visiting the museum room, which demonstrates anyone can collect anything - collections made by more recent Doddington residents are on display such as fossils, sunglasses, pens, Pokemon cards and glass ornaments. There is also an extremely extensive collection made up of fascinating objects from the junk and storerooms behind the scenes at Doddington. Round and Round the Garden (KS1/KS2) This tour explores the enchanting gardens that contain a wonderful mixture of elements from every generation; ranging from ancient trees, to young plants, Elizabethan walled gardens, modern statues, wild gardens, interesting habitats and formal gardens. The turf maze is always a firm favourite and our staff will ensure that the children have a good chance to let off steam! Herbs, Hygiene and Health (KS2) The pretty herb garden offers great scope for sensory learning: smelling, feeling and also identifying herbs. Learn about the use of herbs in cooking, to mask bad odours and in medicine (often quite gruesome!). Make simple nosegays or pomanders to refresh your classroom! There is the option to emphasise the Tudors or the Victorians. As this takes place in the kitchen garden it is an ideal time to look at the difference in the diet of rich and poor Tudors. Eat your Veg! (KS2) The 2 acre walled Kitchen Garden at Doddington is a fantastic environment for young people to learn about growing fruit and vegetables. Explore the garden searching for different fruit and vegetables. Learn about how the garden has changed from 400 years ago to its restoration in 2006. Discover why fruit and vegetables are so necessary in our diet and the importance of seasonal eating. The children may have a go at setting seeds, planting out or harvesting (depending on the season). Oliver's Vegetables (KS1) A workshop for younger children. The children are told the story (with puppets) of Oliver; a boy who won't eat any vegetables only chips. They then set off to find his grandad's vegetables! Find out about ‘what plants need to grow’ and why fruit and vegetables are so important to us. Bugs, Bogguts and Bug Balls. (KS1/2) The Kitchen Garden is an ideal habitat for many creatures from tiny aphids to a sparrow hawk! The children, as intrepid explorers, set off with hand lenses to observe and identify some of the invertebrates to be found. Older children use keys for identification and look at and discuss food chains. Younger children are introduced to some gardener’s friends (with use of puppets) and find out why some creatures are not welcome in the garden! Finally the children either make ‘Bogguts’ out of terracotta clay and things they have collected around the garden (suitable for all ages), or a Bug Ball - a mini habitat for hibernating invertebrates (suitable for KS2).
