Glen Farrelly

of Wales, UK

Glen trained at the renowned Camberwell College of Arts in London, earning his BA (Hons) Fine Arts degree in ceramics, before going on to lead a distinguished teaching career as Head of Art at one of London’s top independent schools.

After two decades of teaching, he relocated to California, an experience that marked a pivotal shift in his artistic journey. When wildfires swept through the area and nearly destroyed his home, he returned to find the land scarred and scattered with remnants of burnt and discarded wood. From this devastation, a new creative direction emerged.

Glen began carving and sculpting the burnt wood, uncovering its beauty, showing its story, and reassembling it into something new. His work became an exploration of beauty within destruction, an act of reclaiming and reinterpreting nature’s remnants.

His sculptures have since been exhibited internationally, from California and Kuwait to Japan, and are currently on display across the UK in a range of sculpture parks and galleries.

Now based in North Wales, Glen is an associate member and trustee of the Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy. He works with reclaimed and storm-fallen timber using Yakisugi, an ancient Japanese technique that preserves wood by slightly charring its surface. ‘Yaki’ means to heat with fire, and ‘sugi’ is cypress. This process makes the wood water-resistant, durable, and insect-resistant while being fire-retardant. Glen's work is sustainable and uses only natural materials.
