Marvellous Moths at Wilder Doddington

What turned up overnight?

Based in the new Wild House, this fascinating morning event offers a chance to discover the hidden world ofย moths.

Join local expert Martin Gray as we unveil the night’s catch and discover the remarkable variety of moths that live at Wilder Doddington. From delicately patterned micro moths to colourful hawk-moths and tiger moths, every trap opening brings expectation and surprise, and no two mornings are ever quite the same.

As habitats across the estate continue to evolve, an increasingly diverse range of moths are being recorded here. Moths are far more than just nocturnal butterflies โ€“ they are important pollinators and excellent indicators of the health of our environment.

With more than 2,500 species in the UK, the world of moths can seem daunting at first, but this event will introduce you to some of the common groups, show you how to spot key identification features, and reveal the fascinating stories behind these often-overlooked insects.

What to expect

  • See moths caught overnight in traps around the estate
  • Discover the incredible variety of colours, patterns and adaptations found in British moths

  • Pick up simple identification tips to help you start your own moth journey
