Estate Walks

Exploring on foot is the best way to experience the magic of Doddington. With ancient woodland, parkland and wide-open countryside, the estate is a haven for wildlife.

There are a number of walking trails across the Doddington Estate, varying in length and terrain. The original routes were made possible through a Biffa Award grant, with more recent improvements supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The trails are free to access from dawn to dusk throughout the year.

Follow the designated routes through the Wilder Doddington landscape. Along the way, you can walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, learn more about our nature recovery project and discover Doddington from a new perspective.

Experience the past, present and future of the estate, all within one remarkable landscape.

Explore with paws

Dogs are welcome on our walking trails but must be kept on a short lead at all times. Our Lincoln Red cattle and wild Exmoor ponies roam freely across the estate, alongside native wildlife such as roe deer. We ask all dog owners to act responsibly and keep their pets a safe distance from livestock at all times.

What might
you see?

Since launching in 2021, Wilder Doddington has seen a growing variety of wildlife return to the estate. Our changing landscape is providing valuable habitats for native and migratory species.

Thinking about
stopping by?

With so much to do at Doddington, it can be hard to fit everything into just one day. So here are a few useful things to know before you set off:

Walking etiquette
At Doddington

04
Take care around our cattle

Our cattle are docile but can be curious. Please do not approach them and never walk between cows and their calves. If a cow follows you, continue walking calmly and quietly - do not run or panic.

05
Come prepared

The parkland can become muddy, so be sure to wear suitable footwear. Check the weather before your visit and dress accordingly, as temperatures can drop quickly even on sunny days.

06
Stay aware

Doddington is a working estate and tractors or other vehicles may be in use. While we want you to relax and enjoy your walk, please remain aware of your surroundings.

Also, during summer and very dry conditions please be very careful not to cause a fire. Fires can spread rapidly, putting wildlife and the wider landscape at risk. Fires and barbecues are not permitted.

Walking routes at Doddington Hall

Start your countryside adventure by following one of our walking trails. Varying in length and terrain, our designated routes take you through the heart of the Wilder Doddington landscape.

Please note: Due to circumstances beyond our control, it is sometimes to necessary to temporarily close some areas of our parkland at short notice, but there are always plenty of alternative walks to enjoy.

Fishpond Walk

A short stroll that takes you across grassland to a small lake. Look out for resident waterbirds including mallards, moorhens, coots and geese, as well as regular visitors such as herons and cormorants perched in the trees above the water. Listen for songbirds in the surrounding trees, including charms of goldfinches.

Woodland Walk

Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, our Woodland Walk takes you through Doddington’s parkland and ancient woodland. You can choose from a shorter or longer route, with beautiful views of Doddington Hall to enjoy along the way.

The shorter route follows the woodland edge, where English bluebells grow in abundance in spring. As autumn arrives and the leaves begin to turn, a variety of fungi can be found nestling in the long grasses and at the base of the trees.

The longer route takes you deeper into the ancient woodland, up to Strunch Hill and out across our rewilding landscape. As you rejoin the parkland, you may encounter grazing livestock, wild deer and a variety of birds and butterflies.

  • Time (shorter route) 30-45 minutes
  • Time (longer route) Approximately 45-60 minutes

Nature Trail

A picturesque walk through woodland and parkland. In late spring, look out for seasonal wildflowers in Donkey Close and the English bluebells in Strunch Hill, an ancient woodland dating back at least 500 years.

Circular Walk

This longer walk follows public footpaths, and offers lovely views of the Hall as you pass through the parkland. Along the way, look out for the ponds, formed when clay was excavated from the ground to make the bricks for the Hall. This walk also offers a glimpse into the ancient woodland of Strunch Hill.
