Winter Tree Identification

Event Detail

Start Date: February 7, 2026
End Date: February 7, 2026
Time: 10am-1.30pm
Adult £30

Even in winter, trees are a beautiful and striking presence in the landscape. But with many of their distinguishing characteristics – their leaves, flowers and fruits – gone, it can make it seem tricky to identify one from the next.

There are though still many clues to help tell trees apart at this time of year – from buds and bark to twigs and overall shape. Once you get your eye in you will see more and more detail, and winter walks will come alive with added interest.

This is a practical workshop that will focus on our native tree species, the types you are likely to come across in the English countryside. As well as identification skills you will also learn about some of the natural and cultural history associated with different trees.

Time spent in the classroom (approximately 1-1.5 hours) will be combined with time in the park and woodland. We will be outside whatever the weather for a further 1.5-2 hours, and walking to view trees on paths that may a bit uneven and squelchy underfoot. So appropriate footwear and clothing is essential.

A great way to blow away some New Year cobwebs!

No prior knowledge is needed, just a warm coat and boots.

Tea & coffee provided.

Saturday 7 February, 10am – 1.30pm (finish time is approximate)
