31 July: Wild Arts present 'The Marriage of Figaro'

Brendan Hesmondhalgh

of West Yorkshire, UK

Brendan Hesmondhalgh first worked with clay at sixth form, an experience that led him to study ceramics at degree level. After a brief period in North Wales, he transferred in 1994 to the sculptural ceramics course at Edinburgh College of Art.

Following his studies, Hesmondhalgh spent 18 months as an artist in residence at Drumcroon Arts Centre, delivering workshops for children while developing his own work for galleries and commissions. A move to Yorkshire in 1998 marked the start of his freelance career. His early practice explored animal forms in both two and three dimensions, often realised at life scale.

Public art commissions prompted a shift towards monumental sculpture, with animals set on plinths and geometric bases to heighten their stature. Surface treatment, colour, direction and texture remain central to his work. Brendan has since developed a distinctive style, widely collected and recognised internationally.
