Myles Mansfield began painting at 40 and enrolled in art school at 46, earning a first-class honours degree followed by a master’s with distinction. Now pursuing a PhD in kinetic sculpture, he has fully embraced life as a full-time sculptor, working across two distinct but complementary practices.

In one, he creates expressive steel sculptures of animals, people and organic forms, always incorporating recycled materials so that unexpected details can be discovered within the work. It is important to him that each sculpture captures the life and movement of the creature it portrays.

Myles’s kinetic sculptures take this exploration further. Built from recycled objects and old mannequins. The ethos of his sculptures is to have all the working parts visible and not to use computers. He doesn't use sketchbooks for planning; each one is built intuitively, embracing a process that is slow and nonlinear. For Myles, he learns every time, and each sculpture is a haptic adventure in embodied making.
