Where you will be based
Across the Wilder Doddington estate

Why we need you

The Wilder Doddington project covers a large and rapidly changing landscape. To help wildlife thrive and ensure visitors can enjoy the estate safely and responsibly, we need practical support across a wide range of conservation and site management activities.

Volunteer Rangers play a vital role in helping us care for the estate, monitor wildlife and maintain access for visitors.

What you will be doing

As a Volunteer Ranger, you will assist with a variety of practical conservation, monitoring and visitor management tasks.

Activities may include:

  • Maintaining footpaths, waymarkers and interpretation signs

  • Carrying out habitat management work

  • Assisting with wildlife surveys and monitoring

  • Checking infrastructure such as fences, gates and livestock water supplies

  • Helping to maintain hides, viewing areas and visitor facilities

  • Recording issues and reporting them to the ranger team

  • Supporting events, guided walks and volunteer work parties

  • Engaging with visitors and helping them enjoy the estate responsibly

No two days are the same and tasks will vary according to the season and estate priorities.

What skills do you need?

We are looking for people who:

  • Enjoy working outdoors in all seasons

  • Have a practical and proactive attitude

  • Are willing to undertake a variety of tasks

  • Can work safely and follow instructions

  • Are reliable and enthusiastic

  • Are comfortable working independently and as part of a team

No previous conservation experience is required as training will be provided.

What’s in it for you?

Volunteering is fun, rewarding and good for your wellbeing.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Make a direct contribution to nature recovery

  • Learn practical conservation and countryside management skills

  • Gain experience of working on a large-scale rewilding project

  • Develop wildlife identification and survey skills

  • Spend time outdoors in a unique landscape

  • Meet new people and become part of a friendly volunteer team

Other information

Our volunteering programme is open to all, although we regret that we are unable to accept volunteers under the age of 18.

We will provide appropriate training, equipment and branded clothing and will do our best to accommodate any specific needs you may have.

Volunteer Rangers may occasionally undertake physically demanding tasks, although lighter duties will also be available.

Our volunteers are a friendly bunch and organise regular social activities for the volunteer team. These can range from an evening in the pub to a visit to a relevant nature project or an informal walk and catch-up.

We would love to meet you and talk more about what we can offer each other. First, we would like to learn a little more about you. Please complete the application form and we will be in touch to arrange an informal chat about volunteering with us.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.
