Sophie Thompson

of Cornwall, UK

Sophie graduated from Exeter College of Art and Design, Plymouth University in 1992. Her practice is rooted in a lifelong fascination with animal forms, shaped by early visits to wildlife parks and years spent working as a groom, closely observing equine anatomy and behaviour.

Growing up in a rural environment, Sophie was inspired by the sculptural potential of discarded farm materials. She transforms scrap metal into expressive animal forms, reimagining objects such as scythes, chains, and blades as integral features within her work. Often, a single found piece sparks an entire series.

Her sculptures focus on movement and character, from the tension of a rearing horse to the stretch of a reaching goat. Working across varying sizes, Sophie constructs pieces from skeletal frameworks, sometimes leaving them open like three-dimensional drawings, or building more layered, muscular forms.

She exhibits across the UK, undertakes commissions, and her work is held in private collections worldwide.
