Opera on the Lawn
From his travels across Africa, India, Nepal, Japan and New Mexico, Peter worked with various tribes and village potters, returning home with a sense of intrigue around how, with limited technology and basic tools, each potter was able to get such exquisite, beautiful surfaces.
Through his adoption of the ideas picked up during his travels, in his own work Peter built up layers of texture combined with burnishing and polishing of surfaces; trying to achieve opposites of rough and smooth. Working on large-scale forms placed in the landscape, Peter’s main hope is for the work to not compete with the landscape, but evolve within the environment. With the elements of time and erosion, the individual piece takes on its own developing surface.
